Labor Migration and STD/HIV Risks in Rural Armenia

Labor migration has been shown to increase STD/HIV risks of migrants and to contribute to the spread of infection to areas of migration origin. This project examines STD/HIV risks of rural married women in Armenia stemming from their husbands' seasonal labor migration abroad (primarily to Russia). It uses self-reported STDs and STD-like symptoms from a representative survey of 1240 married women in 31 villages of Gegharkunik marz (province) of Armenia conducted in 2007. By design, the survey sample contained more or less equal shares of women married to migrants and women married to non-migrants. In addition to the women's survey, a community survey was carried out in each sampled village.
